TP-Link Archer A6 (C1200) Wireless MU-MIMO Gigabit Router 2020 Latest Updated Review

The Archer A6 creates a reliable and blazing-fast network powered by 802.11ac WiFi technology. The 2.4GHz band delivers speeds up to 300Mbps for everyday tasks like emailing and web browsing while the 5GHz band delivers speeds up to 867Mbps making it ideal for HD video streaming and lag-free online gaming.

Overview

The TP-Link Archer  is a dual-band router designed for users on a budget. Despite its affordable price, it offers a few features found on more expensive routers, such as support for MU-MIMO data streaming and four gigabit LAN ports.

That said, while its 5GHz performance is solid, it leaves a bit to be desired on the 2.4GHz band.

It also lacks the USB connectivity and built-in malware protection that you get with the more expensive Asus RT-AC66U B1, our top pick for budget routers.

Pros

  • Affordably priced.
  • Easy to install.
  • Supports MU-MIMO streaming.
  • Solid 5GHz performance.

cons

  • Middling 2.4GHz performance.
  • No USB ports.
  • Non-removable antennas.

Design and Features

The Archer A6 uses a textured glossy black enclosure that measures 1.4 by 9.1 by 5.7 inches (HWD) and has four non-removable antennas.

Along the top front edge are LED status indicators for power, both radio bands, Ethernet, Internet, and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).

The Archer A6 is a 2×2 AC1200 router powered by a 750MHz SoC processor. It can reach maximum data rates of up to 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and up to 867Mbps on the 5GHz band.

Best for Frugal Buyers in Small Homes

If you’re in need of an affordable Wi-Fi router for your dorm room, apartment, or small home, the TP-Link Archer A6 is worth a look.

You won’t get blazing 2.4GHz throughput speeds, but its solid 5GHz performance in our testing means it should have no trouble handling your video-streaming and online gaming requirements.

The web console offers plenty of management options, including parental controls and QoS settings, but malware protection is missing.

Networking

We tested the WAN performance of the router to know the maximum wireless speed. Many routers do not have Gigabit ports and thus do not support Gigabit Internet speed.

You can achieve a speed of 940 Mbps with NAT Boost feature enabled.

The TP-Link A6 Ac1200 supports UNIFI Turbo at an average speed of up to 800 Mbps. The wired LAN, on the other hand, supports 1 Gbps speed.

We tested the wireless performance of the using a laptop with TP-Link Ac1200 and compared the results with the TP-Link Archer A7. After testing the device, we found that the Archer A6 is a bit faster than the Archer A7 when we tested it with an Ac1200 receiver.

The high-speed internet id due to the cutting-edge wireless chipset powered by Beamforming technology. On the Ac1750 client, the Archer A7 will perform better than A6.

Hardware

The TP-Link A6 Ac1200 runs on a single-core processor. It has Qualcomm QCA9563 CPU clocked at 775 MHz. The processor’s clock speed of 775 MHz for a router with Ac1200 is a bit slower.

The Archer A6 supports Beamforming and MU-MIMO technology on the 5 GHz channel. You must enable these technologies to have a faster Wi-Fi performance.

The newer Qualcomm QCA9886 powers the 5 GHz channel rather.

On the other hand, the Archer A7 is powered by the Qualcomm QCA9880.

Thus, the A6 is more powerful than A7 because it has Beamforming and MU-MIMO technology support. The router is also powered with 128 MB of RAM and 8 MB of storage for the firmware. There are no USB ports.
