Introducing Paw Patrol
The game shares an aesthetic synergy with the cartoon and looks just like an episode of the show does. It runs perfectly well and aside from some lengthy loading times, everything is sound as a pound, from a technical standpoint.
Missions require two pups to complete and as such, you’ll head out in tandem. Each character has individual skills that aid you in-game and help to proceed through the linear levels.
Aside from their individual inimitable skills, they never work in unison to solve puzzles. Again, this proved beneficial to younger gamers as the ease of the gameplay provided accessibility.
In much the same vein as the show; Chase, Marshal, Rubble, Skye et all assemble at Paw Patrol HQ where they are assigned missions.
Occasionally you’ll happen upon an obstacle that will require you to perform a simple mini-game in order to proceed.
Be on the lookout!
With the Lookout as your base, you’ll have the whole PAW Patrol team—including Everest the husky and Tracker the beagle
You play as two different pups on each mission and as you help your friends, such as Ryder, Jake, Farmer Yumi, and more.
In the game, players can explore the beautifully recreated world of Adventure Bay as you help the PAW Patrol on daring rescues, collect hidden Pup Treats, and play micro-games that make the most of each pup’s unique skills —all while learning about teamwork and helping the community.
The game is suitable for players 3+ which Hero was particularly delighted about – and even I was able to play, which says something. I am still of the old School Mario 2D land players.
Does a belly scratch make me fall on my back and wriggle like a worm?
Outside of the game’s main missions, there is a selection of minigames to jump into. Ranging from the somewhat disconcerting Pup Pup Boogie Dance-off to a simple game of Jump Rope there is a varied array of simple activities that can engage the smaller versions of yourself.
In all honesty, as a fully grown adult gaming man, the tasks were menial, but my daughter found enjoyment in them, which is who the game is aimed at, so their simplicity doesn’t really hold up as a point of contention.
Each of the game’s levels houses a selection of badges for you to collect and you are rewarded with a gallery of sorts for them. These show off different collectibles – ranging from pup profiles to locations, for you to peruse at your pleasure.
My daughter took great delight in scrolling through the different members of the Paw Patrol team and made sure that I looked longingly at each and every good boy.
A Very Good Boy!
Technically, Paw Patrol: Mighty Pup is a perfectly cromulent package that, for the most part, runs well. Loading time is honestly archaic and there were times where my daughter simply lost interest in the game, due to the waiting involved.
In a few instances, there were some issues with clipping in the scenery and at one point, poor Marshall got stuck in a heat-operated lift, with the only fix being switching character and moving on through the level.
Can you Pet the Dog?
Seeing as you control other members of the Paw Patrol team, it would be a bit patronizing if you went around patting your teammates on the head. I mean, Chase seems like the type, but this is after all kids game and ergo a kid’s review, so let’s not get into it!
Will Paw Patrol: Mighty Pup appeal to you as an adult gamer? No, absolutely not. What it will however do is enrapture your little one, in the meantime offering a gateway into gaming.
It’s fully licensed branding, paired with tight controls and basic, but approachable platforming makes Paw Patrol: Mighty Pup a very decent entry-level video game. On Nintendo Switch – with its pick-up and play approach – it has found the perfect home.
