Linksys WRT3200ACM WiFi Router 2020 Updated Latest Review

Linksys WRT3200ACM WiFi Router 2020 Updated Latest Review.

The LinkSys Smart W-Fi app allows you to configure and manage the router from your smartphone or tablet, but it’s really the open source firmware support that’s the star here.

The Linksys WRT3200ACM WiFi Router is an easy to setup, yet highly powerful router. From unboxing to connecting computers, smartphones and gaming systems to the router’s wireless signal should take no more 15 minutes.

It is best to do a quick site survey of the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless channels being used by your neighbors. Allowing any router to automatically jump between less used channels is ok, but can cause issues with older 2.4GHz devices.

By installing either OpenWRT or DD-WRT you can add advanced features such as secure VPN, TOR network browsing for anonymous browsing, and view advanced network traffic and network intrusion reports.

Gamers are always looking for the fastest connection and a wireless router that can handle multiple connections anywhere in the home. Linksys has been producing reliable wireless connectivity hardware for more than 15 years

I have found that assigning complimentary channels in both spectrums allows newer and older devices to maintain stronger connections, which lowers latency too.

Lowering latency is how you can win more matches faster.

Its 2.4 GHz spectrum proved several megabits faster than my current router, and gave me a larger radius of usable wireless connectivity.

The 5 GHz spectrum provided a zippier experience while streaming HD movies to several devices on multiple floors

There are about 15 wireless routers that show up from my home in the iPhone connection menu, but the Linksys produced more throughput than my old router, even while battling signals from all around.

This router makes a big difference when using devices with the latest 5GHz 802.11ac wireless technology.

Gamers should pay particular attention to the next point. The router has a second 5GHz set of channels that can be used to segment gaming gear.

This means lower latency and faster ping times for devices connected.

As far as gaming goes, the WRT3200ACM essentially offers two features to help reduce latency. The first is a basic Quality of Service menu that lets you grant higher priority to attached devices, games, and applications.

The device prioritization feature is a simple drag-and-drop window, so you just drag whatever machine you’re using for gaming into the High Priority window and let the router figure it out.

You can also grant applications and games high priority by either selecting them from long outdated drop-down lists, or add them manually if you know the port range they use.

The second feature is the previously mentioned open source router firmware, which theoretically grants you the power to run the router in a more stripped down mode, freeing up resources to devote to packet prioritization

Design: A Nostalgic look

The Linksys WRT3200ACM Router sticks with the familiar black and blue design of its predecessors. At 9.68 x 7.63 x 2.04 inches and 28.16 ounces it’s fairly large, and the four inch antennas add some additional height, though each antenna is adjustable and detachable.

The front panel has a series of LED status indicators, while the I/O and buttons are located around back. The Linksys WRT3200ACM covers all the connectivity bases for us and we appreciate the simplistic front panel LED design.

The Linksys iPhone app has been great over the years. I have had friends that call me while I have been out of town and I was able to diagnose their connectivity issues over the phone and fix them remotely. If the app cannot log into the router, the connection issue is either with the ISP or modem.

The WRT3200ACM comes with a setup guide on a CD. But if you have setup a Linksys router before, the steps are basically the same and may even be easier now with the assistance of their app.

Setup Process

Basic installation of the Linksys WRT3200ACM Router is as easy as any other Linksys router, but if you’re purchasing an open source router, chances are you aren’t looking for basic.

With that said, you can still use the included four step Quick Start Guide and get things up and running quickly. Covering our favorite third-party firmware, OpenWrt and DD-WRT, is beyond the scope of this review, but we had no problems installing either.

After unpacking the router, we first attached the four antennas and plugged in the power. The front panel display lit up and we connected the included Ethernet cable to the yellow internet port on the router and to our modem
